Before working with Liz we were introducing the calves to a milking cow diet when they were weaned. Liz changed this to a straw and cake diet and we’ve seen great results. DLWG is good, we are gaining an additional 0.15kg and they are growing into a good frame rather than being pot-bellied.
Feeding the dairy cow - fats
Fats are an important part of the dairy cow’s diet to ensure that they are getting enough energy, especially early in the lactation. Many rations include protected fats. It is really important that the protected fat you choose maximises the health of your cows to help production and milk composition.
Choosing the right fat will:-
- Improve milk protein production
- Improve milk fat production
- Improve body condition score
A fat can be a beneficial addition to a ration but with the number of products available, it can be difficult to pick the right one for your cows.
If you would like more information on protected fats, please get in touch.
